Whitehorse – The Liberal Party will invest in Canada’s North, to help Yukoners with the high cost of living by increasing the Northern Residents Deduction, said Larry Bagnell, Liberal Candidate for Yukon.
The Liberal Party recognizes that the North can create great opportunities, but also comes with an increased cost of living, especially for those outside of Whitehorse.
“To help all northerners with higher costs of living, and to help our economies grow, we will increase the residency component of the Northern Residents Deduction by 33 percent to a maximum of $22 per day,” said Bagnell. “We will also index this benefit so that it keeps pace with inflation.”
The Northern Residents Deduction was designed to help mitigate the higher costs of living in Canada’s north, and help attract new workers. Unfortunately, the deduction amount has not kept pace with inflation, making its help less valuable to those who need it.
“To ensure that families in places like Old Crow have access to affordable, healthy food, we will also increase investments in the Nutrition North program by $40 million, over four years,” said Bagnell. “We will also work with all northern and remote communities to ensure that the program is more transparent, effective, and accountable to northerners and other Canadians.”
“I am delighted that our strategy and investments in the North are focused on people,” said Bagnell. “Two of the biggest needs for us in the north are the high cost of many of our goods and services, and the need for more affordable housing which we have addressed in our infrastructure plan. I am proud to be a member of a party that works compassionately to help make life more affordable for Yukoners and all Canadians who need it most.”
